Grant Cosgrove

2nd Degree Senior Instructor

Grant started training Arakan in 2008 looking to improve his health and fitness.

Little did he know that Arakan was about to transform his life. Through his training, Grant lost a staggering 20 kilos and became a fitter, stronger, healthier version of himself. He thanks Arakan for giving him discipline and focus, and loves sharing his journey with others, to empower and inspire them on their journey.

Grant is a mature minded Instructor and brings a wealth of knowledge across personal development and creating a life you love. He inspires the hearts and minds of his students and walks his talk. Grant’s goal for his students is to learn how to defend themselves and loved ones, to help them achieve their goals and becoming better versions of themselves, improving their health and wellbeing along the way.

Grant trains hard and demonstrates that there is no a barrier for going after what you want in life. He is a patient and compassionate Instructor and loves teaching others to protect themselves and loved ones, to the very best of their ability.

When Grant isn’t training or teaching, he enjoys cooking, reading, travelling, listening to music and personal development. His greatest Arakan achievement is teaching Arakan to others and achieving his Orange Belt.

Student Testimonials

I was first introduced to Arakan and Instructor Grant Cosgrove with a complimentary training session several years ago and Grant has been my instructor since then. He has been inspiration, motivation and challenge all with sensitivity and care about my wellbeing and progress. Grant has been flexible with training sessions on many occasions to allow for healing from old injuries, illness and surgical procedures and other other hurdles called life, supporting me as he carefully pushes me beyond the edge of my comfort zone. He is always positive and calm as we work through the technicalities and practice of skills that are new or that I find complex and challenging; Grant does not let me give in. My Arakan journey so far has been an amazing adventure and I'm blessed to have had Grant consistently as my instructor. I look forward to his continued support and inspiration as the journey continues.

Over the past 18 months that I have trained with Grant I have gain valuable knowledge in self defense & improved to the point where I am completing  difficult techniques far beyond what I thought I would achieve.  Grant is an exceptional instructor who is professional, patient & a wealth of knowledge who can adjust his teaching strategies to make difficult movements achievable. Grant makes every session logical, effective & very enjoyable & it is very clear that Grant puts a lot of effort, thought & expertise into every session.
I have to finally say thank you for all your effort in teaching me Arakan.  I can see how hard you work to teach this art & I appreciate that effort every session you teach.
Thank You Grant,

Brad Gordon

Grant has been our family's instructor for over 3 years. His teaching style and approach is suitable for a great range of ages. In addition to teaching my husband and I, Grant also teaches our two young children, my teenage sister and my mother.
He is adaptable to each person's goals and abilities and always makes the class fun. I would highly recommend Grant as an instructor to people of all ages.

I would like to thank Grant from Arakan Gold Coast, for all he has done with helping me get back on in to shape after 30yrs+ of smoking. As well as the time he's put's in to my 5 year old boy Koby , he's a very shy boy who lacks confidence around other children, and to watch the change in the last year and a bit. Has been the greatest joy for me, to see and getting to train with Koby as well every week . Has helped him come out of his shell and be more focused. With everything he does , once again thank you not just to Grant but to the hole team/family for letting as be a part of this . Loving life again.

At the ripe age of 48 i felt i needed something else to focus on other than work. I had little spare time but knew that if i enjoyed what i did i would find the time.
After training privately with Grant Cosgrove for just over a year now, i have found the art has helped mind, body and spirit immensely. The training is practical, enjoyable and doesn't impact too heavily on the body unlike other arts or sports.
I also had the pleasure of attending various training seminars throughout the year at interesting locations led by Chief instructor Rob and his army of top instructors, which whilst tested the nerve, really reinforced the art in real life situations.
The respect that is shown towards the students by both fellow students & instructors is an absolute credit to the organisation, hence why it continues to grow in popularity.
If anyone of any age is considering adding something special to their personal status, take a complimentary class in Arakan as i did and enjoy the journey.

Grant has a great understanding of Luke's limits but is always encouraging him to do more and want to do more, and to incorporate the use of both sides of his body even though it is difficult. Luke loves training with Grant and there is improvements in Luke constantly. They are a perfect fit as Luke tends to talk too much and get distracted but Grant is very good at keeping him focused.

Grant has been a total professional in all aspects of training and proven himself to be an outstanding role model for my son Deklan. Grant has a wonderful ability to make training seem fun while pushing Deklan in his skills and fitness levels.

Grant is an excellent teacher and Instructor. He is incredibly patient and will answer the same question over and over in a different way until I understand. Grant is very helpful and gives/shows what real life experiences I could expect/anticipate which has made me more confident in my everyday life and I feel safer thanks to Grants training. He is an amazing Instructor because I have watched him train my mum and he does an incredible job with her and adapting to my mums learning style.

After an unfortunate turn of events earlier in the year, all 3 of my kids now have self defence lessons every week.

Today their Instructor 'pushed a button' and one of my kids started to break down, emotionally.

Their Instructor immediately stopped, walked over and put his arm around them, told them to let it all out and stood with them with his arm around them as they cried. He then used a circuit breaker activity to move on from it and was beautifully gentle for the rest of the lesson.

Afterward they *child* told me that they felt a bit embarrassed for crying but their Instructor had made them feel safe in doing so and that they believed they would be safe to continue to release the emotional pressure caused earlier this year, with their Instructor.

What a genuine and strong second male role model for my kids, other than their father. Money can't even buy that kind of authenticity.
